*Cold Weather Safety Tips*

As the temperature starts to drop, certain safety precautions should be taken when it comes to your pet.

  • Keep cats indoors if at all possible.  Cats will find warm hiding places like car hoods and engines, which can lead to injury or death.
  • Thoroughly wipe off your dogs feet, legs and stomach when he or she comes in from outside.  The snow gets packed in the pads of their feet and can be very cold and painful.  Ice can cut the pad as well.
  • Use a pet friendly ice melt.  The salt can burn an animals feet.
  • KEEP ANTIFREEZE PUT AWAY!  Antifreeze is toxic and deadly to animals.  Clean up any that the car may have leaked.  Contact your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY if your pet injests antifreeze.
  • Do not shave your pet too closely during the extremely cold months.  But if necessary, consider buying a sweater or coat for your dogs for when they have to go outside to go potty.  Also, if bathing is a must, make sure your pet is COMPLETELY dry before going outside.  Pets can easily get chilled.
  •  Do not leave pets in a cold car.
  • Make sure your outdoor pets have adequate shelter and warm bedding.  Heated water dishes are a good idea when temperatures get below freezing.
  • Deep snow can make a pet very exhausted and poses a big challenge for elderly pets.  Clear a path to make it easier to get around outdoors.
